UMBI's Research Day a Success


Rockville, MD - On Wednesday November 30, 2005, UMBI hosted the third in a series of programs in recognition of its 20th Anniversary celebration. UMBI's "Research Day" provided an audience of more than 150 people with the opportunity to learn about cutting-edge bioscience research done at UMBI's five centers of excellence. Speakers included: Vik Vakharia from UMBI's Center for Biosystems Research (CBR), his topic was "Diagnosis and control of poultry virus infections"; Russell Hill from UMBI's Center of Marine Biotechnology (COMB), he spoke about "Microbial symbionts of marine invertebrates as sources of bioactive compounds"; Bruce Vogel from UMBI's Medical Biotechnology Center (MBC), his title was "Extracellular matrix proteins in development and disease"; John Marino from UMBI's Center for Advanced Research in Biotechnology (CARB), spoke on "Probing the mechanism of heterotrimeric G-protein signaling using high-resolution NMR"; Alfred Garzino-Demo from UMBI's Institute of Human Virology (IHV), talk was entitled "Host factors limiting HIV infection"; Zeev Pancer from COMB spoke about "Leucine-rich repeat (LRR) modules: linking innate and adaptive immunity"; Shuwei Li from CARB spoke on "Protein detecting microarray, a new tool for medical diagnosis"; Jum Sook Chung from COMB talked about "Hormonal regulation of the blue crab molting and reproduction"; Illarion Turko from CARB finished the day with his topic of "Mucosal proteomics: linking innate and adaptive immunity".
