April 27, 2005 April 28th Media Advisory- Press Conference Baltimore, MD - On April 28th at 1:30 p.m., Lieutenant Governor Michael Steele will be hosting a press conference at the State House in Annapolis to announce the successful launch of our President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) work centered in Nigeria. This is work focused on Dr. Bill Blattner's grant that was awarded several months ago through which 1,300 patients are currently being treated in Nigeria, with plans calling for over 10,000 patients treated in the future. ### Celebrating our 20th anniversary year, UMBI is the first and only biotechnology research institute within the University System of Maryland and was established in 1985. The University of Maryland Biotechnology Institute (UMBI) consists of five major research and education centers and is dedicated to advancing the frontiers of biotechnology. UMBI’s centers of research include: CARB, the Center for Advanced Research in Biotechnology located in Rockville; CBR, the Center for Biosystems Research located in College Park; and COMB, the Center of Marine Biotechnology, MBC, the Medical Biotechnology Center, and IHV, the Institute of Human Virology, all located in Baltimore.
