PERRONE IS NEW UMBI BUSINESS VP

BALTIMORE, Md.-- International business executive and scientist Joseph B. Perrone, Sc.D., is the new vice president for business development with the University of Maryland Biotechnology Institute (UMBI).

Perrone was most recently with the medical technology company Becton Dickinson. UMBI President Jennie Hunter-Cevera says the addition of Perrone is part of her current strategy to further strengthen the marketing and licensing of biotechnology both in Maryland and globally.

"We hired Dr. Perrone as part of our effort to re-emphasize our original mandate of economic development. He will be looking at the market values of our current and pending patents, building portfolios within and outside of UMBI, and reaching out to a wide diversity of companies and other universities," says Hunter-Cevera.

The institute was founded in 1985 with a mandate from the state legislature to lead new research paths toward increased commercialization of biotechnology. There are now five UMBI research and education centers in the Baltimore/Washington area offering many untapped marketing opportunities for its new technology, says Hunter-Cevera, in the medical, agricultural, and marine industries, as well as in the new sciences of genomics and protein biology.

At Becton Dickinson, Perrone was director of business development for Africa, Asia and Latin America where he developed many new opportunities in emerging world markets. He also brings to UMBI an impressive list of achievements in negotiating and managing business partnerships, royalty and licensing agreements, intellectual property issues, and strategic planning.

"UMBI's scientists have a wealth of information and I am very excited about getting that information into the hands of people who want to market it," says Perrone. "There is a lot here we have not tapped into in terms of intellectual properties. I know that the real reward, the fun part, is to see your paper, your research, your project become part of a commercial product, a manufacturing process, a cost savings innovation or a means for environmental protection."

Perrone has a doctorate of science degree in immunology and infectious diseases from the Johns Hopkins University School of Hygiene and Public Health. At Becton Dickinson, Perrone led a team to develop the first rapid manual test format for malaria in the world in less than three years. Among his professional associations, Perrone has been a member of the Steering Committee on Diagnostic Products, World Health Organization; and the Corporate Liaison Committee, American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene.

The five UMBI centers in Maryland are the Center for Advanced Research in Biotechnology in Rockville; the Center for Agricultural Biotechnology in College Park; and the Center of Marine Biotechnology, the Medical Biotechnology Center, and the Institute of Human Virology, all in Baltimore.
