1.) Goto http://www.umbi.umd.edu/alerts/erp.php
and click the "Initial User Signup Form"
link to obtain access to the UMBI's automated emergency alert system.
2.) Fill out the form by
entering a "Username", your "First Name" and "Last Name", and a "Password" in the text boxes provided. Confirm
your password by retyping it exactly as before in the "Verify Password" box.*
3.) Click the box next to
the group(s) to which you wish to belong. You will only receive alerts directed
to the groups you have selected. You may change your
selection at anytime by logging into this system and updating your account
profile (see below). You are automatically subscribed to Alerts sent to UMBI as a whole.
4.) Enter the phone number
of the cell phone on which you wish to receive alerts. You may choose to
receive alerts via email exclusively by clicking the link located at the bottom of the
form labelled "Click
Here To Sign Up Using EMAIL Only". This will swap the present form for one which allows entry of an email address
vice a cell phone. (See below for ways to recieve alerts on both a cell phone and/or multiple email addresses)
5.) Select your phone
carrier's network using the drop down box provided.
6.) Check the "Agree To Terms Of Service" box after
reading the terms of service presented when clicking the associated link.
7.) Click the "Create Account"button which will
simultaneously send a test text message to your cell phone and bring up a new
HTML page within which you will find a field labelled "Validation Code".
8.) Enter the validation code included in the test
message sent to your cell phone into the "Validation Code" box and click the "Validate"
button to complete the creation of your account**.
*You may use choose to use your UMBI username but it is not necessary
and because this service is available to individuals outside of UMBI we can not
gurantee that your username will be available when you signup. In the case of a conflict it is recommended that you prepend your UMBI username with "erp-". This will help make remembering your Alert Username easier should you need to access and update your account.
**If you do not receive the
test message on your cell phone within a moment or two you may click the "I did not receive a text message with my
validation code" link located below the valdation field. This will complete
the creation of your account but leave you without assurance that your cell phone
will properly receive alerts. Please bring this issue up with an OIS technician by sending a message with your contact information and a short description of your
problem to ois@umbi.umd.edu.
