Board of Regents Policy II-2.00 - Policy on Sabbatical Leave for Faculty permits the President of UMBI to grant sabbatical leave to faculty members. The primary purpose of such leaves is to provide an opportunity for a faculty member to conduct scholarly or creative work in order to increase his or her contribution to the mission of the institution, and to enhance his or her standing in the discipline or profession.

To be eligible for sabbatical leave, a full-time faculty member shall have been granted tenure and shall have completed at least six years of service at the time of an initial sabbatical leave or since the last previously granted sabbatical leave. A part-time faculty member shall have been granted tenure and shall have completed six or more years of at least half-time service. Ordinarily, a leave of absence without pay shall not be regarded as service to the institution for purposes of determining eligibility for sabbatical leave.

The duration of sabbatical leaves are typically 6-12 months with 3 months as a minimum. For sabbaticals up to 6 months, the faculty member can receive the normal rate of compensation. Faculty are compensated at ½ the normal rate.

Procedure to Request a Sabbatical Leave

A Sabbatical Leave Request must be recommended for approval by both the Center Director and the VPAA. Only the President or designee can approve a sabbatical leave. Final approval of the sabbatical leave is contingent upon receipt of a fully executed agreement (Memorandum of Understanding [MOU] or Visitor's Agreement) between UMBI and the proposed host institution covering intellectual property that may result from the sabbatical project.

To request a sabbatical leave, the faculty member must:

1. submit a Sabbatical Leave Request Form

2. submit a Letter of Invitation from the host institution

3. identify local contact(s) for on-going projects and other responsibilities that he/she may leave behind.

4. work with ORIC to generate an agreement with host institution

5. submit a brief description of the proposed sabbatical leave project which will set forth the nature of the proposed sabbatical project and the reasons for believing the project will be professionally beneficial to both the applicant and UMBI.

Rights and Responsibilities of UMBI Faculty on Sabbatical Leave

Responsibilities - Ordinarily, as a condition for receiving a sabbatical leave, the recipient must agree to return promptly to the institution at the termination of the leave and to serve on his or her normal basis for at least one academic year.

While on sabbatical leave, the recipient remains subject to USM and UMBI policies and procedures including, but not limited to, the policies on Professional Commitment of Faculty and the Policy on Intellectual Property.

Within 3 months of their return from sabbatical leave, the recipient will submit a written report summarizing the sabbatical activities to their Center Director, to the VPAA, and to the Office of Sponsored Research. The report should include a review of the work performed while on sabbatical leave, a statement of publications prepared or anticipated new intellectual property, and an assessment of the value of their leave.

Rights - During the period of sabbatical leave, the recipient will be permitted, with the approval of the President or designee, to accept, in addition to the compensation he or she receives from the institution, grants, awards, contracts, fellowships, or other compensation or stipends as may be related to the approved sabbatical leave project.
